Is CD Duplication or Replication Best for You?

What is the difference between CD duplication and replication? Which option is best for your project? In order to make your decision, make sure that you truly understand the pros and cons of each method.

Duplication refers to the process of burning material onto a blank CD. (Burning is how information is recorded onto the disc.) On a smaller scale, the process is simply referred to as burning, but when this is done on a much larger scale, the process becomes “duplication.” At this level of recording, machinery such as multi-disc duplicators are employed. This makes it possible for many discs to be burned at once.

Throughout the process high-quality blank discs are used and burn speeds may be set at a low rate in order to guarantee top quality results. After the music or other media has been recorded onto the CD, the other side of the disc can be printed with either thermal printers or inkjet technology.

The benefits of using CD duplication include the speedy turnaround and the versatility of the results.

Replication, on the other hand, is a more involved process with multiple complications. The attention to detail must be painstakingly given. However, this process usually delivers a much higher quality of sound – although this may not be evident unless your listeners have older models of CD players. The attractive silvery, metallic bottom of a replicated has a very professional finish.

On the other hand, duplication is much more affordable. The quality of duplicated CDs is excellent and may only come into question when they are used on older players that cannot handle CD-R technology. Many new musicians or up-and-coming business owners do not have the resources to purchase large orders of discs, but the replication process almost always requires a large minimum order. Duplication may be completed for just one disc and other small orders.

CD duplication holds many advantages for you. Whether you want to order just a small amount to send out samples of your music or want to promote your business with a selection of examples, an order of duplicated CDs can be just the thing you need.
