CD Packaging of the Week: Mute Audio Documents (1978-1984)

Artist: Various Mute Artists
Title: Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984
Label: Mute
Year: 2007
Designer: Adrian Shaughnessy

How do you organize documents? Hmm…with file cards, of course! And that pretty much is the very literal concept of Mute Audio Documents. It is a compilation of 128 tracks placed over 10 CDs of Mute’s single releases from 1978 to 1984. Having a solid concept for 10 CDs is quite challenging but the designer managed to pull off a cohesive theme for the 10 CDs and that for me is genius enough! I like the colors of the big box. The black background makes the pastel colors stand-out.

But what I love most is the individual CDs. Placing them in very basic plastic jewel cases adds impact to the whole concept of a filing documents. The effect is a sort of classic meets modern look. It would certainly have a less powerful effect if they placed it in a digipak or CD wallets.
