CD Manufacturing: Making an Album on a Budget

There is a very big distinction between frugal and cheap. Frugality is spending smartly and saving where we can so we still have cash leftover for the things that are important.  Most Indies want to be frugal when it comes to CD Manufacturing. Some musicians are concerned more on spending less because they have no funds left and would sacrifice the quality of the music or the packaging just to get things done. Those are the cheap ones. The frugal and wise musicians try to fit their budget as best as they could without compromising quality. Here are some ways to cut down CD manufacturing cost wisely.

Do not attempt to do everything on your own

Yes, you read it correctly. Doing everything entirely on your own could be a great mess and could cost you more dollars than when you have it done by a CD Manufacturing company.  The fast advancement of technology allows us to burn CDs at home but this doesn’t mean it would be of top quality. Being your own CD Manufacturing company may cost a little at first but you may end up doing everything from square one because of technical incompetence thus you would end up spending so much more. If you plan to distribute it to friends and family, I guess there would be no problem if you DIY but if you plan to distribute it to more than 500 people, then please get the help of professionals when it comes to CD manufacturing.  You can experiment with your music and become creative but when it comes to CD manufacturing, there’s no room for error.

Do Estimate a sensible number for demand of your CD

In order for you to cut down the cost of CD manufacturing, you have to have a good estimate of the number of CDs that would probably sell. It’s not wise to produce 3,000 copies when there are only 20-25 people who regularly show up at your gigs. If this is your first time to produce an album, a safe number would be 500. Anyway, you can contact your CD manufacturing company to make some more if you run out of copies.

Do research on Affordable CD Manufacturing Companies

So now that you are somewhat convinced to leave the CD manufacturing to the pros, it’s time to look up and down, left and right, for the cheapest CD Manufacturing house in town with the best quality. Call your friends, ask your music circle and start contacting each one of their recommendations for price quotes.  You can also try searching the web for good companies but you have to be careful because there are lots of CD Manufacturing companies sprouting every day.  In order for you to at least eliminate the bad ones, ask them certain questions like why they use specific CDs, what inks they use and why. If they have a hard time answering your questions, it might be that they only buy those materials because they are currently the cheapest in the market.

Do let a friend or a design student make your album art for free

Instead of paying a large sum for a professional graphic designer, contact your friends. There are also many graphic design students who are willing to make good designs for bands just to beef up their portfolio.  Do not forget to credit him/her in the album.
