Indie Music Marketing: LIVECHAT to Develop Intimate Connection with Fans


The internet may be cursed by some musicians for ‘stealing’ a big chunk of their revenue due to illegal downloads and easy access to their music but the internet also provides musicians a bigger venue to gain more followers. If you a new indie musician, you may be surprised that you can get a lot of fans around the globe simply by utilizing and maximizing the perks offered by the internet. Make creative music videos and put them on YouTube, start a good blog, join all social networking sites. The internet offers numerous opportunities for artists to become known and develop a direct relationship to the fans.

 

One addition to the list is LIVE CHAT. Livechat allows musicians to webcast a video of themselves to their fans. It is pretty much like talking to someone on Skype. The fans ask questions through a text-based chat room interface and the band will answer them one by one. This can be done, of course, by the more established musicians. Those that already have enough followers who are thrilled to get to know the musicians more.

Many musicians use USTREAM for livechat. Unlike previous webcasting technology, Ustream uses a one-to-many model, which means that the user can broadcast to an audience of unlimited size. Its tabs feature a banner prompting users to “Click here to become a fan and RSVP for the next webcast!”  and a comment box which fans use to talk to the artists but which also publishes their comments to their feed.

Livechat is very effective because it creates a somewhat  intimate connection to the fans which will likely increase their ‘loyalty’ to the musicians. As we may already know, intimacy is important to maintain a fanbase. So if you want to have  more loyal fans, this may be one of the best ways to do it.
