5 Tips for Designing your CD Packaging so You Get it Right the First Time

CD DVD cases

So you’re in the final stage of releasing a record. Congratulations! Unfortunately, it’s not yet time to relax and celebrate. CD manufacturing might seem like the album is as good as done but in reality, it’s a whole new meticulous process that requires a lot of things from you including the layout of your CD packaging. For a more seamless and stress-free CD replication, you have to get everything right. For first-timers, here are some tips on designing your CD packaging:

For commercial release, know the specs and the elements needed. For example, on the front cover, the music publishing company’s logo, name, copyright statement, location, and catalogue number must appear. There must be a  “Compact Disc Digital Audio” symbol as well. Check out this site for a complete list of CD packaging specs.

Use the right templates. Of course, your designer knows this but just make sure he’s using the right template (meaning, the template of your printer). Never attempt to use the templates of other duplication companies because every duplication company has different sets of templates. Make sure you select the correct template for your project to avoid issues, delays and additional fees.

Involve the printer from the beginning. That being said, you must involve the printer from the beginning so you would know the templates, requirements, specs, and everything else.

Using eco-friendly materials is a plus. Over recent years there has been a lot of focus on environmental issues, and the role of packaging in this – you may gain competitive advantage with eco-friendly packaging. 66% of consumers say that they feel products are over-packed, and presume that all packaging is bad for the environment. But, of course, it’s good for your conscience too.

There are many packaging materials that can add oomph to your packaging. Running out of ideas for your CD packaging? Instead of going crazy with your graphics, why don’t you put a twist to the materials you use. Here are some materials that could add some oomph to your CD packaging.
